Easy To Prepare Traditional Amish Food

Traditional Amish recipes are often served at family get-togethers and other group outings, such as church or a wedding. The main dish is usually something cooked in the community’s large, cast iron pot, fed by firewood and stoked with an Amish community member’s shoulder. It could be anything from chicken to vegetables.

A typical side dish is one or two of the following:

-Homemade bread

-Potatoes

-Cabbage

These dishes are often served with a homemade relish, which usually contains a vinegar base, such as ketchup or pickle juice. Some common ingredients in the relish include onions, tomatoes and cucumbers. Homemade desserts are also popular with the Amish people. These desserts could be pear stewed in cider and spices or a pudding made with molasses and cornstarch.

The Amish are known for their simple, back-to-basics way of life. They avoid modern conveniences and only use technologies that have been in existence for a couple hundred years at most. But how do the Amish eat? Do they have traditional recipes?

Much like anywhere else, the Amish eat what’s available in their region. In Pennsylvania Dutch Country, where many Amish live, there are plenty of farms and orchards that provide fresh fruits and vegetables. They also keep cows, chickens, and other livestock on their farms. In addition to raising food animals for themselves, the Amish can also sell their surplus eggs, milk, cheese, and meat to non-Amish neighbors and farmers.

Another major staple of the Amish diet is breads made from wheat flour as well as baked goods made from oats. While the Amish do not use electricity in their kitchens or own ovens (only gas stoves), they still bake delicious breads and treats from scratch—some of which are sold to local restaurants and even grocery stores.
